Creative Technologist · Apple · Tomorrow Evening
He follows real-time graphics from GLSL to Metal, and builds the editor at every stop.
Colin Duffy engineers real-time 3D at Apple and runs Tomorrow Evening, the creative-technology studio he founded in 2008 and never closed. He came up animating Flash banner ads at Los Angeles agencies — CP+B, R/GA, Deutsch — then rode the web onto WebGL, publishing open-source tooling like webgl-mograph and hermes. Lately he wires depth cameras and 3D-printed ESP32 controllers into Unreal Engine over WebSockets, closing the loop between the render and the physical world.

In 2025 Colin pushed real-time graphics off the screen — a Femtobolt/Kinect Azure body-tracking pipeline over WebSockets into Unreal Engine, a custom Unreal creative-coding plugin that starts (as always) with a tweening engine, and WebGPU output driving NeoPixel LEDs through a Teensy. In June 2026 he took the craft in-house as a real-time-3D engineer at Apple.
“Been mostly experimenting with C++/WebSockets in Unreal for creative technology tests involving multiple technologies but playing with more!”
From 2022, while creative-technical lead at Wildlife, Colin poured his energy into open-source WebGL tooling at the height of the Three.js/Theatre.js ecosystem: webgl-mograph, a full real-time motion-graphics engine for the browser (35 stars); hermes, a live Three.js editor that grew a WebGPU renderer; and a cluster of editors, shader experiments, and utilities under Tomorrow Evening.

Colin went native and real-time on device: Lead Graphics Engineer for AR on iOS in Swift and Metal at Mav Farm (2019–2020), then Lead Technologist at Anivive driving WebGL, Metal, Unity3D, and Vue/React. He became an FWA Judge in 2020, and open-sourced tomorrow_web — a 76-commit personal standard library underpinning his WebGL work.
Colin came up through art school (Otis, Digital Media) into the Los Angeles agency world in the Flash/ActionScript era — animating banner ads and building AS3 frameworks at RED and Ted. Perez. He founded Tomorrow Evening in 2008 and kept it running through staff roles at CP+B, Deutsch, and R/GA, shipping HTML5 and openFrameworks work for Domino's, Airbnb, and Beats By Dre.
