The design leader who ships the working software himself.
Matt MacQueen is a hybrid product and design leader who directed Seeklight AI — a 0-to-1 tool that cut archival processing from nine weeks to two hours — from concept to the board at JSTOR. Before that he built Coursera's first design team from 2 to 23 and led UX on Google's Moto X. He came up through creative writing, and in 2026 he's writing his own Claude Code skills by hand.

In 2024 Matt moved from directing AI teams to building with AI himself. At JSTOR he defined Seeklight AI — concept to board to $1.6M first-year revenue across 340 institutions — and the AI research UX, from concept to private beta in six weeks and 120 to 14,000 universities. Then he started committing his own Claude Code skills.
“building new products at the edge of what AI makes possible”
Hired by JSTOR's founder in 2018 to reinvest in design quality, Matt set a three-year One Platform UX vision and chartered a design-engineering team whose open-source design system unified four codebases, cut deployment time 70%, and reached the 98th accessibility percentile. He integrated the acquired Artstor platform, retaining 97% of subscribers for $8M ARR.
“User trust is the constant across every product and every domain.”
As Coursera's first design leader, hired by CPO Tom Willerer, Matt grew the design and research team from 2 to 23 through Series B/C/D hypergrowth — the company scaled 70 to 350 people and $2M to $95M revenue in three years. His purchase-flow redesign lifted Specializations conversion 40%, and a learner-dashboard redesign raised course completion 13%.
Matt spent a mobile decade defining product UX. At Motorola he set the 2–3-year portfolio vision and demoed confidential concepts at CES to AT&T, Verizon, and China Mobile. Through Google's acquisition he led nine designers on the Moto X — voice, gesture camera, data migration — which The Verge named Best Android Phone as global sales grew 54% to 10M devices.
