The design director who ships production code himself, from an NFC checkout to a solo-built AI startup.
Ron Goldin directs product design at PayPal, where his team owns a consumer app spanning +$1.7 trillion in payment surfaces. Over fifteen years he led design at Shopify's $300B Checkout, Walmart, Meta Reality Labs, Google, and the first Uber Eats courier team, and founded two companies — starting with an agency whose first client was a seed-stage Uber. He codes his own products now: he built the MTCHMKR SaaS solo on Lovable and Claude Code. In 2025 he also became a certified fly-fishing guide, teaching 21 NYC public-school teachers.

Between the Shopify reorg and the PayPal directorship, Ron launched three bets in one month: MTCHMKR, an AI SaaS he designed and coded solo on Lovable and Claude Code; TAP NYC, a gathering for design leaders; and Formative, his Product, Design & AI newsletter. In December 2025 he took over PayPal's consumer app — +$1.7T in surfaces.
“change is the only constant, nothing is black and white, and technology is rarely purely good or bad”
Across Uber, Google, Meta, and Walmart, Ron scaled from design lead to Head and Director while keeping his hands on the work. He built the first Uber Eats courier experience (22→120 cities), reimagined Google Local Search with AI/ML, led a 0-1 wearable OS at Meta Reality Labs (80+ features), and drove Walmart's first enterprise AI across $500B+ in revenue.
“Hands-on AI forward leadership. Leading by example.”
Ron moved to New York in 2010 and opened Studio Akko, a full-service agency whose first client was a seed-stage Uber. He then went in-house at two Series B marketplaces — Glamsquad and Kitchensurfing — as Head of Product & Design, shipping consumer and B2B apps and moving retention and booking metrics. Scrappy, high-stakes work.
“My first client was Uber during its seed round, when there were just a handful of Ubers on the road and only available in SF.”
Before New York, Ron studied graphic design, computer science, and psychology and 'fell headfirst into product design at Microsoft' in California, interning at Microsoft Research 'across the street from a young company called Google.' It set the pattern he has repeated since: be present where the technology is being invented.
“I feel lucky to have been in the heart of Silicon Valley when modern technology was being invented.”
